Health
in New Zealand: the health system in New
Zealand is funded by the Government. The country’s
residents have a right to receive free hospital
treatment, discounts for medication and assistance
for the disabled. The Government funds cover visits
to the physician, medication for minors, people
who need frequent treatment and people living in
low income households.
Assistance during pregnancy and childbirth is free
in Public Hospitals, and so is dental care for children
in preschool, primary and intermediary levels of
education. Medication is partly funded by the Government
and is available for free for those under the age
of 6 years.
Medical Insurance:
some New Zealanders take out private medical insurance
so as to avoid the waiting lists in the public system.
This type of insurance can also be taken out by
tourists for certain periods of time, according
to the various needs.
If a private insurance policy implies faster access
to non urgent services in a private hospital. It
also provides access to certain health care services
which the public system does not cater for, such
as plastic surgery.
Accident Insurance: if you have a visa permitting
you to stay in the country and an accident occurs,
the New Zealand accident insurance system, called
“ACC” for “Accident Compensation
Corporation", will help to pay any medical
treatment involved, including visits to the doctor,
dentist or physiotherapist. ACC also provides assistance
for daily care, such as a home nursing care or child
care assistance.
