Accommodation
in New Zealand: Those wishing to study in
New Zealand have various accommodation options to
choose from. Although the most popular and recommended
option is the family home
stay, hostels and apartments
are alternative choices.
New
Zealand family homes: New Zealanders are
considered very friendly people and the country
is proud of its Homestay policy. Families taking
in students are carefully selected, making sure
that amenities necessary for the student are covered.
Generally, these homes are close to the universities
or within easy access. Staying with a family is
a very enriching experience as it allows the student
to get to know the “kiwi” way of life
from the inside, sharing customs and traditions
and picking up the colloquial phrases and expressions.
A half board system is followed on weekdays, which
includes breakfast and dinner, and full board on
weekends.
Hostels:
staying in hostels is also a popular choice for
those students that have reached a certain level
of English. They are brought into contact with students
from different countries, with whom they share the
rooms; individual rooms tend to be more expensive.
Apartaments:
renting an apartment is, no doubt, the least economic
option, although it is common for several students
to rent a furnished apartment together, sharing
expenses, thus making it less expensive. Rents are
usually made on a more long term basis, which allows
for the negotiation of more convenient prices. Apartments
to let are situated close to the universities and
usually include a washing machine, central heating
and a refrigerator.
