Description
The Academy is located in Newmarket, just 5 minutes away
from downtown Auckland. It is a very modern area which
in recent years has become fashionable due to its cafes
and recreational areas. The school has been open since
1991 and owns four campuses where students are allocated
according to their ages. Davis Campus is for students
aged 12-17, Melrose Campus for adult students (18 years
and older), Broadway Campus for administrative matters
and student councils and Mount Albert Grammar School for
high school preparation courses.
Accommodation
The Academy is situated close to main facilities for student
accommodation. The most popular form of accommodation
is the homestay program, where students are hosted by
local families. These families are specially chosen to
take in students and introduce them to the country’s
customs. Students are provided with breakfast and dinner
on weekdays and lunch on weekends.
Students over the age of 18 can opt for more independence.
A considerable selection of hotels or hostels can be found
in the school’s vicinity, where single or double
rooms are available.
Academics
The Academy offers General English courses with 15 hours
per week of classes that are centered on reading comprehension,
conversation and grammar. Preparation courses are also
offered to students with an advanced level of English
which need to perfect some aspect of the language and
which allow them to sit for entrance exams for tertiary
study.
Exam courses which prepare students for international
examinations such as Cambridge, TOEFL and IELTS exams
are very popular. Another popular course at the school
is the English Conversation Course, with 8 hours per week,
where students practice pronunciation, conversation comprehension,
use of vocabulary, sayings, etc. Those with a more advanced
level of English can take up a Business English course,
consisting of 8 hours per week.
Activities
The school organizes a series of activities for students
to participate in during their free time, which include
city outings, visits to museums and sporting and cultural
activities.
