Security
in New Zealand: the New Zealand Police is
the national service in charge of ensuring that
the criminal laws and traffic regulations are obeyed
all over the country. It is a decentralized organization
divided into 12 districts, a central office and
service centers in each district. The police don’t
usually go about armed and therefore have a very
good reputation among the New Zealanders. It is
all about a community based service and the policemen
and policewomen are motivated by feeling responsible
for their own communities. The crime rate in New
Zealand is very low due to the prevention and recidivism
reduction programs carried out by the government
each year.
Some tips: Travelers
wishing to avoid problems throughout their stay
should keeping mind a few simple rules:
* the best way of moving around with money is through
the use of travelers checks, and changing these
as you need the money;
* where possible, leave all items of value (jewelry,
travelers checks, credit cards, airplane tickets,
etc) in a safe at the hotel or place you are staying
at. In the Yellow Pages you will find a listing
of business offering security services and safe
deposit boxes as another alternative.
* don’t leave luggage in an unwatched car.
* take out a traveler’s insurance policy to
cover the costs of any losses or robberies that
may take place.
